WE do our reading, too!

I've been reading other web sites a lot lately that also deal with many aspects of cash flow instruments, including one of my focus issues, the forward funding or "cashing out" of structured settlements and annuities.

One particular web site, John Darer's BLOG Structured Settlements 4Real discusses many different issues about the settlement planning industry.

We especially like the Advertising Wall of Shame and Alert to Regulators! , there where John discusses some of the harder parts of selling your annuity and some of the pitfalls of trying to find a buyer for a structured settlement.

As with any other endeavor like selling your home or your car, there are always good reasons to do so, and good reasons NOT to do so as well as good buyers and, well, let's be frank here, bad buyers, who will think nothing of taking advantage of you, the seller.

We agree with John here. While you might certainly have the ability to sell your annuity or other structured settlement, and there are sometimes very good reasons to do so, one should think long and hard about undoing what has been put into place by a judge.

You certainly don't want to end up regretting your decision to do so later, so we always advise thinking long and hard about selling your annuity.

There ARE good reasons to do so, though, like the young 21 year old gent who called us recently to discuss selling his annuity that he had been receiving payments from yearly since age 14, an inheritance put in place by his great aunt  years ago.

The day that he called, then at age 21, this fellow wants to buy his first home and fund his college education, something that his annuity has the funds to do easily considering where he live in this country, but only if he has a cash lump sum now to do it with. Waiting for the funds to get to him with the schedule in place would take more than a decade.

After careful thought and consideration, as well as discussion with advisers he trusts, he taking took time to shop it around and select the right deal for the right source of funding. We like that, as well as the reason why he wants the cash now. AND we highly advise that anybody considering the same course of action do at least that.

We know things change over time, and we also know there are, sometimes, very good reasons for selling an annuity originally set up for one purpose in the past that may not address issues now in the present.

Hopefully ALL of our clients who call us about annuity sales are doing the same, thinking long and hard about the process, and deciding to do what is best for them.
